The telecom industry has been evaluating Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), with the aim of optimizing cost, removing dependency on proprietary hardware, improving scalability and creating agile environments.
Thus, it is pertinent to consider what aspects are potentially being sacrificed in order to gain the potential benefits of NFV.
For instance, NFV recommends running network functions as software over industry-standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers rather than proprietary systems (often ATCA-based dedicated hardware with real-time operating system (RTOS)), which had contributed to carrier grade performance.
Though the majority of service providers may recognize the potential benefits of NFV, many are skeptical whether NFV can truly deliver carrier grade services. Adoption of this architecture has been slower than anticipated – some services providers are doing proof of concepts (POCs) to pilot production roll-outs, whereas others have completed their POCs and are moving to field deployments, only to uncover surprises.
