Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a network architecture that implements virtualization of network node functions to deliver communication services efficiently. It offers the potential for both enhancing service delivery and reducing overall costs for service providers who are offering business networks, consumer networks (e.g., VOIP and IPTV), mobile networks (e.g., 3G/LTE), etc.

While this brings in a major shift in manner in which networks will be deployed, service providers need to ensure that their SLA metrics will not be degraded by the changes, before they begin the transition to NFV architecture. Thus, services must be verified for both functionality and performance before deployment and then further be monitored during delivery of the services. It is important to take an organized approach in transition to NFV, mainly because failures in the field resulting from lack of thorough testing leads to lost revenues and losing customer confidence. The availability of the right tools for NFV testing, benchmarking and monitoring becomes critical.

NFV Performance Testing

SAMTEST provides testing based on RFC 2544 and Y.1564, and benchmarking for HTTP, VoIP and TCP.

With SAMTEST, various performance metrics including bandwidth, frame delay (FD), frame delay variation (FDV) and frame loss ratio (FLR), can be measured utilizing physical or virtual probes.

SAMTEST provides the ability to ensure that the performance measurements of individual VNF entities that relate to a service are associated correctly. For instance, the DNS query request and response time taken by a vDNS can be measured. Similarly the relevant performance metrics for other VNFs like vRouter, vCPE and vEPC can be measured.

SAMTEST provides active monitoring capabilities for L2 and L3 with support for virtual probes, initiators and reflectors. It supports the ETSI MANO and MEF LSO architecture.

In an NFV deployment, while determining the end to end latency could be feasible, the root cause could be either the VNF, the platform hosting the VNF or any other component in the network. By utilizing service chaining, SAMTEST helps the service provider to determine the latency caused by select VNFs on-demand. Thus, instead of providing the end to end latency, the solution offers scope to determine intermediate latencies, greatly assisting troubleshooting to determine the actual bottleneck causing service degradation.

VNF visibility

Monitoring virtual environments is more complex than their physical equivalents because NFV servers are expected to contain dozens of service chains and hundreds of network functions.

Veryx vTAP is a lightweight pluggable software component that supports monitoring of both east west and north south traffic of VNFs. This granular traffic visibility in virtual network infrastructures, allows users to identify and isolate potential network issues that could affect performance.

The data that is tapped can be analyzed with Veryx Flow Analyzer and other third-party analyzers.
